New blog ! (sorta)

I decided to switch over to wordpress. So my new blog is now: http://lillianchenartworks.wordpress.com/

Attempt at landscape artwork

I really wanted to draw something involving a cliff with a waterfall. For the past few days, possibly a week, I had the idea of drawing a small house on a cliff that had a waterfall nearby.

The rest of the sketch was purely as I went along. The river was partially already thought up of but the thought of connecting it to open water was thought of purely at the moment. I originally was thinking of a cliff for which the house was situated on, but the open water posed a problem in terms of perspective. I somehow thought of making the cliff as a mountain and added in an extra cliff behind/above the house.

The left of  the sketch was a bit of a blank for me early on until very last moment I thought of using the idea of perspectives and adding in a second cliff. I'm still debating if I want a person, or a person's shadow, on the left cliff to portray someone looking over this scenery.

Taking a pencil drawing into Painter and coloring it

Pencil sketch on lined paper. I'm going to draw the line art of it in a separate layer in Painter and then go on from there.
The line art (more or less). Most likely, as usual, I'll change something midway and alter it.

Not showing step by step process as I did with my previous post - all the brushes used then were used now with the exception of the Real Wet Oil> Wet Blender
The Real Wet Oil > Wet Blender was a choice I made on my own, no videos this time, as a brush choice to use for lighting the jacket.

Another new brush I decided to use is the Blenders> Grainy Water. I used it on the jacket after adding in the lighting on the jacket.

Colored version - currently missing background.

Got a little lazy with the background and didn't put as much effort. Basically used 3-4 colors for the sky, 1 for the clouds, 4 for the rocks and 3-5 for the ground and its effects. Then I blended everything with Blenders > Grainy Water.

Realized I forgot my signature as well as dirt on her knee (closest to the ground) and her boot. I still feel like I'm missing details...

playing around with hair

Figured I'd start somewhere and decided to play around with hairstyles while reading some tips.

Originally I was going to try drawing male hair (since my previous drawing was a female). But the hair didn't turn out right; a bit too cartoonish/odd.
This is a G-Pen outline of part of the original sketch. I then dried to add detail and fine-tune it a bit. I didn't draw in the eyes just yet.

I decided to go back to step 1 and make a new sketch...which ended up looking like this:

Modifying it, which included playing around with the collar and trying out different designs before just settling with the basic shape I originally had. Outlining with a G pen I got this:
Sadly, her eyes aren't exactly correct in terms of placement...her left eye (image right) is too close to the ear/far from the right eye.

I think though I should start drawing stuff in Painter and outlining it in there. Resizing each drawing from Manga Studio to a suitable canvas size (something not  4000 x 7000 pixels) would be nice...

(Outline &) Coloring in Painter 12

I took the tip I found in a youtube video of  having each line art part (for example, hair, skin, eyes, shirt, etc) as each its own layer. With another video, I decided to try out the Oils> Details Oils Brush  for outlining the sketch.

I personally like the finished outline the Oils > Details Oils Brush gives.

For coloring, I'm going to try out Real Wet Oil > Wet Oil (also due to another video).
Lower the opacity in the layer you're coloring in, so you can see the layer underneath (the outline /line art). Paint using a base color in a big brush size then go back and erase the colors outside of the area you want it in.

Base colors are set in, with the exception of the eyes. I'm planning on doing the eyes as well as the rest of the face details last.

I used Real Wet Oils > Wet Grainy as my brush for shadows. Same idea; paint in a big brush size then go back and erase stray marks and fill in anything missed. For the skirt however, I'm going to play around with the pressure of the brush and try to make the shadow more "gradient" like.

I used Tinting > Directional Diffuser to "even out" the shading with the dress (I then discovered I could use the "Pick Up Underlying Color"  in the layers window to my advantage and proceeded to use blending brushes (Oily blender and Grainy Blender).

More shadowing/folds details drawn in with Real Wet Oil > Wet Grainy. Then blending with brushes mentioned above.

Digital Soft Pressure Soft Airbrush and Detail Airbrush for the eyes. I played around with the dab opacity as well as pen pressure. Further detail will be added using Pencil > Oily Colored Pencil

Background was simple brush through with Wet Oil brush.

Seeing paint tool SAI...

After seeing paint tool SAI being used so often on deviantART, I wanted to see if I could do the same sort of coloring in Manga Studio.

Layer 1 Quick Pencil Rough Sketch

Layer 2 Finer detail pencil sketch

Layer 3 Final pencil outlining

Layer 4 Rough pen outline

Layer 5 Final pen outline

Layer 6 Hair color  - base and some shading

Layer 7 Shirt color - base and shading
*I still don't like the result as much so there's a chance I'll go back and add more shading to the shirt.

Layer  8 Skirt color - base and shading /lighting
Added in legs as well as altered the skirt shape and added folds to the skirt

Playing around with Manga Studio Debut 4

After watching the tutorial videos on the Manga Studio site, I decided to play around with the features it gives.

Playing with pencil, pen and coloring.

Playing with pencil, pen, panels and tones.
